More Love: Songs from Little Voice Season One Club gave the first season a B− for some good and uplifting performances but a scattered performance by Brittany O'Grady and excessive storylines. The website's critical consensus reads, " Little Voice's earnest tune is a little too familiar, but a winsome cast led by Brittany O'Grady and catchy music from Sara Bareilles make for a breezy summer binge." Hero 4 session1/18/2024 Firstly the button is hard, if not impossible, to access when the Session is mounted. Pairing is easy enough, but using this button to flag video highlights depends on a number of different factors. This is mainly used for pairing the Session with a smartphone or flagging a video highlight so you can find it easily while you’re editing.īuy Now: GoPro Hero Session at .uk (£149) | ($199) There’s another button on the back that’s recessed. Next to this is a small LCD screen that lets you know how long you’ve been rolling for, how many pictures you’ve taken, the quality of video you’re shooting, and remaining battery life. Core features are covered by one button on the top of the GoPro Session. Physical controls are minimal, as you might expect with such a dinky little device. The bolts are there so you can replace it if the worst should happen – a replacement kit with two lens covers costs £34.99/$39.99. The lens is protected by a sheet of glass bolted on to the body and we’ve yet to scratch it in the slightest. GoPro has clad the Session in textured rubber, which makes it both grippy and tough. The good news is that we’ve dropped the Session half a dozen times during testing and it’s shrugged off all the bangs and bashes. There’s no such safety net when you’re holding the Session in your hand, though. This protects all but the lens area from the worst damage a drop can cause. The mount covers all the corners and edges of the Session, just like a case on your phone does. Once inside its mount that’s not too much of a problem. Losing a thick, tough outer shell does mean the Hero Session is more exposed to the elements, but also less protected from knocks and drops. GoPro claims this improves the quality of audio captured and we’re inclined to agree, but we’ll go into more detail on that later. The small grilles housing the microphones – one on the front and one on the back – aren’t covered. ![]() There’s another benefit to losing the waterproof case. The GoPro Hero Session compared to the Hero LCD+ That’s what makes the Hero Session so neat – it’s water-resistant for up to 10m/33ft without the need for a cover. And let’s face it, you’ll want your GoPro protected from the wet stuff more often than not. You can’t do that with any other GoPro.īut how small is it really? It’s just 35mm each side, which is just half the width, and a little more than half the weight, of a Hero4 Black in its water-resistant housing. In fact GoPro’s Senior Producer, Cort Muller, mentioned strapping the Session between the spokes of a bicycle. That makes a big difference when it comes to mounting a GoPro in an awkward position. ![]() Everyone we’ve handed the GoPro Session to coos, “Look how small it is.” And that’s the nub of it – this is an extremely compact action camera, a full 50% smaller than its Hero4 siblings.

Best place for foodies1/18/2024 The suspense combines with your excitement, making it taste even better. You watch it drip, slowly, on top of condensed milk. Moving from food to coffee, Vietnamese coffee is not just delicious, but an experience. I’d also recommend taking a Vietnamese cooking class in Hanoi. A walking tour gives you the best option for this. However, you want to do it as safely as possible. While you’ll delight in various meat and noodle dishes on your own, the thing you want to try is street meat. I’ve never found it again since leaving this spectacular country. It’s double-cooked, and exploding with the perfect mix of vegetable and/or meat filling. Shopping in Hanoi (Photo Credit: Heather Markel) VietnamĪmong my favorite real Vietnamese dishes is the Hanoi spring roll. Put the request in for a table by the window, when you book, and arrive a little early for the reservation to increase your chances of getting one. Pro Tip: reserve your table a month or more in advance and you’re more likely to get a table by the window, with the perfect view. One of the best places to eat, because it’s great food, and a spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower, is Les Ombres. You walk up to the grill window and request any meat you want, prepared how you like it. One of my favorites was in Tigre at Vivanco. You should have no problem finding restaurants throughout the country that serve an asado. A mixed grill that’s got every meat you could possibly want, and it’s all delicious. ![]() You won’t regret it! The lamb dish I ate here was lamb shank cooked in such a way that the rich flavors melted in my mouth and the accompanying sauce only highlighted the lamb flavor, instead of overwhelming it. El Calafate was my first choice for lamb dishes. You’ll find it more available in Patagonia than in the rest of the country. I’ll admit, Uruguay has the best lamb in the world, in my opinion. (You’ll need to reserve a table, or sit at the bar without one.) Lamb Don Julio was one of the best steaks in the country, for a fancier experience. And, it’s pretty cheap if you’re traveling on the dollar or euro. I tend to eat red meat once a month, but, when in Argentina, found it so good I began eating it daily. You can eat steak pretty much anyplace in Argentina, and it will be the best steak you’ve ever eaten. I think of Africa as a foodie destination because if you’ve spent most of your travels in America, Europe, and Asia, this food is radically different from anything you’ve tasted before. As a kid, the only game-meat I tasted was venison. Photo Credit: Heather Markel Cape Town, South AfricaĪfrica is known for gamey meats. Finally, you can’t leave Peru without at least one pisco sour. It really does taste like the food of the gods. Each piece had different flavors, and I most enjoyed the one delivered to my table on a hot stone, so I had the option to cook it more and taste how more or less cooking impacted the flavor of the meat.ĭon’t miss out on Peruvian chocolate both eating it and having it as hot chocolate. They served an alpaca dish where it was cooked three ways, grilled, pan fried, and oven baked. So, my curiosity was piqued when I got to Arequipa and ate at a rooftop restaurant, Sonccollay. On the plus side, they have very low cholesterol! Throughout Argentina and parts of Peru, I was accustomed to alpaca stew. I treated myself to an excellent seafood lunch at La Mar and loved the wine, the food, and the atmosphere.Įating these cute animals took some getting used to. Even in New York City, where I’m from, you can usually find a table at a popular restaurant a week out, so Lima surprised me. I learned that restaurants in Lima are so popular you might not get to eat in them without a reservation, in many cases, a month ahead of time. ![]() You’ll get an excellent feel for the variety of foods typical to Peru, and a chance to see fun neighborhoods like Barranco. A must-do activity is a food walking tour, ideally on one of your first days in Lima. ![]() I’ve never seen such large kernels in my life, and they’re delicious when served in Peruvian dishes, as well as some of the dried corn snacks unique to this country. The first thing that amazed me in Peru was the corn. While I found it tough to narrow down my recommendations, I offer you some of my favorite foods from my recent travels around the world: Photo Credit: Heather Markel Lima And Arequipa, Peru While I think many countries offer excellent food experiences, some stand out more than others. When choosing where in the world to travel, food is a great way to narrow your choices.

Rumble racing circus minimus1/17/2024 ![]() The race would begin with the dropping of a white handkerchief (mappa). Roman chariot races were thrilling and short, but occasionally brutal. Teams could also be associated with divinities: White with the wind god Zephyr and Red with the war god Mars. Their supporters would reinforce the sense of enmity between the two by associating White with winter and Red with summer. writer Tertullian recorded that the rivalry between Whites and Reds was the oldest. The four factions-Red (Russata), White (Albata), Blue (Venata), and Green (Prasina)-existed during the republic and continued well into the empire. Much like sports leagues today, Roman chariot racing had teams with legions of devoted fans. the games were associated with mass culture, power, and populism. Sponsorship by generals boosted the popularity of racing and other sports, so by the first century B.C. Arguably, it is at this stage that the spirit of chariot racing began to evolve into entertainment. As Rome’s military influence grew, generals began dedicating portions of their war booty to sponsor chariot races and other games. ![]() the Ludi Romani became an annual event, sponsored by the state. Chariot racing was incorporated into the early Ludi Romani, the games held in honor of the chief Roman god, Jupiter Optimus Maximus. Games likewise formed an important religious role in the emerging power of Rome. The word “hippodrome” also comes from the Greek, with hippo meaning “horses” and dromos meaning“path.” ( Delphi was home to the Pythian Games, sacred to Apollo.) Homer’s epic The Iliad features chariot races as part of the funeral games ordered by the mourning Achilles in honor of his fallen companion, Patroclus. The purpose of these events, which included chariot racing, was to please the gods, either through sacrifice or in presenting bodily skill as an offering in itself. They were holy activities and part of solemn religious rites. New stadiums were built in other cities, and racing became an obsession there.Ĭhariot racing’s historic roots, however, tap deep into the sacred beliefs of ancient Greece, whose games-such as the Olympic and the Pythian events-were not considered entertainment. Chariot racing’s popularity only grew as the Roman Empire expanded. These same elites funded the construction of massive venues for racing, such as the Circus Maximus in Rome and the Hippodrome in Constantinople. ![]() The spectacle, as described by Wallace centuries later, was indeed intoxicating, but some Roman elites looked upon racing with disapproval. Wallace adored chariot racing, but ancient Rome’s relationship to it was more complicated. let him see the fours, chosen for beauty as well as speed. in their left hands held in careful separation, and high. let him see the drivers-in their right hands goads. let him then, in this perfect field, see the chariots, light of wheel, very graceful, and ornate. Let the reader try to fancy it let him first look down upon the arena, and see it glistening. Unauthorized use is prohibited.Ĭan we accept the saying, then these latter days, so tame in pastime and dull in sports, have scarcely anything to compare to the spectacle.

Isadora 1968 poster1/17/2024 ![]() She also invented multi-hued dramatic lighting techniques, many now commonplace, to enhance the undulations of her voluminous fabric. Her act consisted of a costume designed from massive swatches of silk attached to long bamboo rods being whirled and twirled while Fuller circled about on an elevated stage. Born Mary-Louise in 1862, she was a Chicago-area native and innovator of a brand of free-form performance art known as Serpentine Dance. Jason Robards is seen as Paris Singer, the American heir that fell in love with the dancer, but didn't seem to have much in common with her.But the name Loie Fuller, the subject of “The Dancer” who was an early supporter of Duncan, did not ring a bell-at least, for me. Vanessa Redgrave at the height of her beauty was magnificent in her interpretation of the troubled Isadora. The most famous one was Paris Singer, the son of an American millionaire which ended tragically as their son and her daughter with another man drowned, something that weighed heavily on this tormented woman. She had no luck with anyone of her lovers. Another thing that is clearly evident in the movie is the unhappy life of Isadora. Redgrave's renditions of works created by the famous artist. One thing comes across: she was a woman ahead of her time! Her disregard for classical dance made her famous, although as shown in the film, one wonders what liberties the filmmakers took in Ms. The biopic, directed by Karel Reisz, follows aspects of Ms. The main attraction is Vanessa Redgrave's take in the subject matter. The opportunity to watch it again came when it was shown on a cable network recently. "Isadora", which came out in 1968, came and went without much fanfare. The bigger than life Isadora Duncan, a dancing legend, is the focus of this film. By the time Isadora sits down to document her loss in the harrowing centerpiece, the audience has begun to put the puzzle pieces together. They intersect more frequently, only very gradually revealing themselves to the viewer. The Riviera/Nice sequences were more of the film's "spine" and the hallucinations of Isadora's children and their funerals begin as a mystery. Generally, the roadshow version differs from the Director's Cut in the overall rhythmic feel of the film. Russia and her death in Nice followed the Intermission and made up the film's last hour. The Roadshow's intermission came after Isadora reveals the circumstances involving the death of her children, coming at the 2-hour mark. One additional dance performance sequence The later trimmings tightened things up a bit. Many of the Jason Robards/Paris Singer sequences were longer and a tad more intricate. Young Isadora and her brother Raymond improvising dances in autumn leaves in Kensington Garden The Duncan Family checking into Claridge's Hotel as "The O'Gormans" and sneaking out the next day without paying the bill. The Duncan Family taking a transatlantic cattleboat to Europe in dreadful weather. What is missing are some early establishing scenes of: Karel Reisz's 153-minute Director's Cut from 1987 is very close to what was seen on NBC. ![]() ![]() While that broadcast was missing (1) the Intermission music, (2) the lovemaking scene between Redgrave and James Fox, and (3) a snippet of nudity in the "Marche Slav" sequence, much new footage was added. NBC broadcast the complete roadshow version over two nights twice in the early 1970s.
